My name is Joonas Rasanen and for the past five years, I have been competing at the highest levels of ski racing and pursuing my dream of reaching the pinnacle of the World Cup circuit. I’ve competed in three World Championships, World University Games, NCAA Championships, and numerous World Cups and Europa Cups, though now it’s time to turn a new leaf in my life and I’m excited to announce that I’ll be taking on the role as the Head U-16 Coach at EMSC for the 2019-2020 season.
Here’s a little background on me. I grew up in Kaunianen, Finland skiing on a hill that was 37 m in elevation. We lived near the hill and my mother was running the ski school, which where I learned the basic fundamentals of ski racing. When I turned 16 I attended a ski-specific high school in middle-part Finland until I went off to mandatory military training in Lahti, Finland, which is where I was recruited to ski for the University of New Mexico.
In 2011, I left Finland to attend UNM on a skiing scholarship and pursued a degree in Communications with a focus in Broadcast Journalism. While I was at UNM, I won an Individual NCAA National SL Championship, as well as a World Championship SL title. After I graduated in 2015, I pursued a full-time career in ski racing, though now like I said, I’m very excited for the future!
During the past seven years, I have been coaching at various camps in the Summers and also run my own Spring camp in Levi, Finland during the month of April. While doing this, I have realized that coaching is a passion of mine. I’ve had many coaches during my time in ski racing and I’m going to try my best to combine the best of all of my coaches/mentors throughout this year and next step. Looking forward to the Fall and can’t wait to start working with all of you!
Remember to smile,
-Joonas
